Overall, no.

The Simpsons has been around longer, is THE original Groening creation, and the episodes are so much more quotable than Futurama.

However, and this is a bone of contention with me (is that a saying?) the latter years of the Simpsons have been utter tripe in my opinion, it should have been cancelled instead of Futurama.

Futurama had so much potential and room to grow when it finished, whereas the Simpsons has worn out its comic edge and is more juvenile, more bizarre and the characters are a million miles away from what they used to be.

(Sorry Chesty and co.)

I'm with the first half of Jacob's response.

I think The Simpsons at its peak (series 5-9) is far superior to Futurama. Futurama is probably on par with The Simpsons series 1-4 and 10-14, and better than The Simpsons Series 15 onward*.

But overall ... no.

* I'm yet to find a Simpsons episode that doesn't grow in me with age, so I'm saying 15 onward with the disclaimer that they're episodes I've for the most part only seen once, so have no idea of the nuances contained within.

That said, a friend and I were eyeing off the prawn pasta of another friend at lunch today and she commented that the prawns looked almost as tasty as popplers, and I snorted my drink through my nose, no in no way does my above assessment conclude that Futurama isn't awesome.

Just not AS awesome.

Ha, popplers. That episode was awesome.

I've always wanted to name one of my pets Nibbler.

I am a fan of both - I do find Dr Zoiberg one of the best characters on television, however this is closely followed by the Sea Captain (especially the episode where all his waiters in the restaurant pull the practical joke on him bloody Hil ar I Ous). I appreciate the adult comedy of Futurama compared to the slightly childlike antics of Homer and co. In conclusion, I like them both, but Futurama is just edging out the Simpsons at the moment. Maybe if they repeated Futurama ad nauseam for the next 20 years and then put on 3 episodes a day through very lazy programing I wouldn't be such a fan.

Actonb,

yeah.

Jacob,

"bone of contention" is a saying.

And yes, take your point about the cancellations - although I think Futurama pushed the Simpsons a bit further out on a limb in later seasons.

Chesty,

It is awesome. I must admit to being a bit sick of Simpsons through over-watching.

Jacob,

Me too. Must buy (new) pet.

KR,

Zoiberg isn't my favourite character, although I can't really figure out who is.

I quite liked the ep. where Bender fell in love with the ship.

I think it's best not to overwatch The Simpsons. I avoid the ones screening on TV (except the three or four 'new' ones they screen every year) and just settle down every few months for a marathon of VHS-ey goodness (I'm slowly moving to DVD but I have every episode between #1 and #300-odd on VHS and that does me fine ...)

That way they stay fresh and surprising.

I know this is a little late - but I LOVE DR ZOIDBERG.

He's so funny, and clueless to the fact that everyone kind of hates him.
